Providence College coach Ray Treacy has a reputation for getting his runners to run their best in cross country and track and field.  Last year his women's team finished second at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and returned .  Coach Treacy is in his 30th year with the Friars.  In his time he has coached 13 NCAA individual champions and 11 Olympians and his athletes have earned 159 all-American awards.  His women's teams have won five team and men's team has won two trophies including the school's first NCAA team title in 1995 by the women's team.  This interview was transcribed from a conversation.
  1. Adam Schneider (AS) - Talk about the season.
Ray Treacy (RT)  The goal all season was the Big East meet.  Get everybody together (at Big East) and run well three weeks later.

AS - Tell me about how you feel coming into the northeast region - your top five has finally come around.
RT - At the Northeast Region we feel pretty good about the course.  There could be six teams coming out of the region and we need to keep our wits about us.

AS - Is the team healthy?  Your top three has been exceptional but 4-5 have been a work in progress. (Specifically Grace Thek)
RT - Grace Thek has been injury prone over the years and we have been very careful with her all year.  We thought about running her at Wisconsin Adidas but that would have been her first race so we put her in a small race first.  At this stage of the game if any of them (top teams) has lost a member of their top five they wouldn’t win.

AS - After finishing second last year how did the team respond? You have a strong top three.

RT - Last year we had three all-americans in cross.  Laura took an extra step running 15:50 outdoors in the 5k.  I knew the three would be that good.  They help each other in training and in races.

AS - Coming into the regional meet what are you telling them, team or individual performance to help the team?
RT - Each individual is going out and doing their best.  At Wisconsin and Boston they were just doing their job.  They focus on the team but individual as well for the most part.

AS - How do you win the NCAA meet?  Arizona has run well.
RT - After summer, last year's performance was the motivator for how well they ran . They were ranked seventh before the conference meet. They used that as motivation.   By far the Big East meet was the biggest motivation.

AS - Your #4 runner has run well all season tell me about her.
RT - Maggie has been doing her own thing.  She was second at Footlocker.  She learned a lot at Wisconsin which helped her to have a much improved performance at Big East.

AS - Tell us about how you will win the NCAA championship over #1 Arizona
RT - I will imagine we just focus on ourselves.  Arkansas is great and Georgetown is fantastic.  The last two Big East champions have gotten 1st and 2nd.  We know they (Arizona) are  good.  You just gotta do what you are capable to do.  Tomorrow, all we want to do is qualify, just gotta do our own thing.  Make sure are well rested and this is partly about training.  This will be our last tough workout before the NCAA meet.
