Phoebe Anderson, a three-time Ivy League Heptagonal Cross Country Championships first-team honoree and two-time NCAA Division 1 Championships for Columbia representing England, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing Nov. 10 at the Division 1 Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park in New York. Anderson, who placed second Oct. 28 at the Ivy League Heps final at Franklin Park in Massachusetts, has secured sixth-place performances the past two years at the Northeast Regional. She reflects on Columbia finishing fourth at the Ivy League Heps championship meet and her optimism for the Lions being able to secure an automatic berth at the regional meet. Anderson revisits Columbia taking third at last year's regional by an eight-point margin behind runner-up Syracuse and the Lions missing out on advancing as a team to the NCAA Division 1 final at Oklahoma State. She expresses gratitude for the depth of the Northeast field and the opportunity to compete against elite athletes like Ivy League Heps champion Maia Ramsden of Harvard and Kimberley May from Providence. Anderson analyzes her 17th-place effort Oct. 13 at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison in a 6-kilometer personal-best 20:16.5, and the confidence she gained from competing against several athletes who earned All-America honors at last year's NCAA final. She also explains the benefit of Columbia competing Sept. 23 at the Virginia Invitational at the Panorama Farms Course, site for the Division 1 final Nov. 18 in Earlysville, and how much confidence Anderson gained from getting a preview of the championship layout. She shares how significant it has been to build relationships with several European athletes competing in the NCAA, including Amina Maatoug of Duke and Shannon Flockhart from Providence, and how it has inspired Anderson to pursue opportunities to represent Great Britain at future international competitions. Anderson speaks about how special it would be to lead Columbia to its first Division 1 championship berth since 2019 and to earn All-America honors for the first time in her career, and expresses gratitude for the 20-minute travel to run at Van Cortlandt Park.
