Maia Ramsden, an Ivy League Heptagonal cross country, indoor track and outdoor track champion for Harvard along with a finalist at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and Division 1 cross country final, joins DyeStat editor to reflect on the women's team securing back-to-back conference titles Oct. 28 at Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx, N.Y., and pursuing a third straight Division 1 Northeast Regional crown Nov. 11 at the same venue. Ramsden, who was born in New York and has lived in New Zealand, the Solomon Islands, Fiji and Ethiopia, explains the differences in the respective 6-kilometer layouts at Van Cortlandt Park for both the conference final and regional meet, and reflects on the 2019 Northeast competition that was held on a road course in Buffalo, She analyzes her improvement since last fall, elevating from fifth place at the Ivy League Heptagonal final to become the first Harvard female competitor since Courtney Smith in 2016 to secure the individual crown. Ramsden also highlights the improvement of her teammates this season and how much they have progressed, especially competing on two of the most respected courses in the country Sept. 24 at the Cowboy Jamboree at the Greiner Family Course at Oklahoma State in Stillwater, along with Oct. 14 at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison. She revisits the lessons learned from racing in November 2021 at the Division 1 cross country final at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla., and how much those experiences not only motivated her during the indoor track and outdoor track seasons, but also during summer training, in addition to her 10th-place performance in the 1,500 meters in June at the NCAA Outdoor final at Hayward Field in Oregon. Ramsden expresses gratitude for the patience, leadership and support demonstrated by Harvard coach Alex Gibby, in addition to the confidence she has gained from his training schedule. She also speaks about how valuable teammates Matthew Pereira, Graham Blanks and Acer Iverson have been in competing with such an ambitious and fearless approach, in addition to how instrumental her opportunities were to race last year against Kayley DeLay of Yale, along with being challenged by elite fields throughout this fall in preparation for the Division 1 final Nov. 19 in Stillwater, as Ramsden seeks All-America honors.
